What irks me is that yesterday morning she didn't want to eat, or drink and the meds they had given her and seemed to wear off. So we called the vet to ask if there was anything we can do. We had just seen them, they told us that the Tramadol's dosage could be modified while we were there, but when we called they refused to adjust her medication until we went back there and spent another $30 for a second visit. Only 4 hours after we spent hundreds on her meds/tests!! So hubby and I searched online and found she could be given an 3rd pill (this was later confirmed by them when I called yet again for help). Ugggh. So frustrating.
I asked if there was anything we can do to help prevent them, as I come home from work every day at lunch to let her potty, I give her Vitamin C tablets they suggested and she still gets sick. They suggested that we perhaps move to a less dog filled area since Cinnamon likes to mark her territory which is why they feel she is getting infections. So I'm looking for places to move.
Do you have a female dog that gets urinary infections? Can you suggest anything that has worked for you?
Any ideas or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not a Dr. but I worked as a veterinary assistant for many years. UTI is build of bacteria in the bladder and can be caused by many things including bladder stones, immune system problems, diabetes or many other things. Being alone during the day can cause issues with having to hold the urine, maybe consider installing a doggie door or have someone come over a few times when you are at work. Make sure she drinks PLENTY of fresh, clean water, preferably not chlorinated such as "city" water. Avoid ALL sugars in foods, some dogs do better on an organic diet. Avoid walking her in areas sprayed with weed or bug killer. nativeremedies.com sells a pet product called UTI -free, some have had sucess with it. Hope this has been of some help other than maybe find a new vet:)

I'd love to have my own yard but we live in a second floor apartment :( I will looked up the nativeremedies website, thanks so much for all your info! Her vet recommended yogurt, vitamin c and switching her diet. hopefully that'll help as well. thanks again!!
ReplyDeleteWe had a cat who used to get bladder infections. I started dosing him with cranberry capsules and it helped. You can get them in health food stores.

If anyone thinks it's silly to take a dog to the vet at any hour, should not own a dog. I think people should treat their dogs and cats like children. If they are sick would you take them to the ER or wait until morning?

Thank you for all the kind words! Cinnamon is doing so much better. Joanne, I didn't like that vet at all. Her regular vet ok'd me giving her yogurt and vitamin C tabs. Looks like it worked, her urine is back to normal. It seems that I was able to train her to potty a bit higher and that seems to work as well!
